This is my first time to this board. I have been taking vicodin (norco) for 14 years and have tried to kick on my own before. I have gone to a doctor and he has given me suboxone and I will be starting therapy as well.
I was hoping that someone had tried this method........and succeeded. I took my last vicodin 38 hours ago and my doctor indicated that the longer I wait to take the suboxone....the better I will feel.
I hope to only be on the suboxone for 1-3 months ....until I get my life in order.
Looking forward to having a goal besides securing my next high.
Thanks,
KK

In the past couple of weeks I have met 2 people that have been on it. It has helped them. I know that they have been using it in Europe instead of Methodone for some time now.
I am nervous of course when it comes time to get off of it......I'm not sure how hard that will be.
I think it will give me time to strengthen myself through therapy.....and meetings. And when the time comes to get off of the suboxone I will be ready.
I know that some in the program (AA NA) look down upon this.....but if it works I will be a happy woman.

Dear FreeRobyn,
I just wanted to let you know the difference between Suboxone and methadone. Here is what I could find:
First of all, methadone is an opioid. You may see references to 'opiates' and 'opioids.' The difference is that opiates are substances that are extracted from the poppy (opium) seed. These are pure substances such as: opium, morphine, codeine, etc. Opioids are either semi-synthetic, such as: hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, etc.; or, synthetic, such as: methadone. Opiates and opioids act on the mu receptors in the brain and spinal cord altering the feelings of pain. Opiates and opioids are also called: agonists.
There is a third kind of opioid. These are called 'agonist-antagonists.' Some of these include: pentazocine and buprenorphine. These medications include an opioid and, in a smaller ratio, an opioid blocker. Such blockers (antagonists) are called: naloxone and naltrexone. Suboxone (a Schedule III controlled substance) is a combination of: buprenorphine and naloxone. If you type 'Suboxone' into an internet search engine, you will see many results for this medication. The Suboxone helps you detoxify by using the antagonist part (naloxone) to rid your body of the opioids, but still allowing the agonist part (buprenorphine) to help keep the withdrawal to a minimum. Methadone, on the other hand, contains no antagonist. Though synthetic, it is a pure agonist, and mimics the effects of morphine and other pure opiates.
There are pros and cons for Suboxone, just as there are for methadone. For some people, it may help. For others, it may not.
I hope this information helped. Good luck with your treatment program and keep posting. We are all here to help. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Thanks Raerae I'm on my way.
Katie,
If you go back and read old posts on this site you will find the information that you need. Also like Rarae said read Kyle's old posts about Sub and there's other posts from people who are on it that will be helpfull to you. Most posters who have used it and are still using Sub talk positively about it.

Thanks Sharon. I was clean for a month and a half and started using about six weeks ago. I go to NA. I am so frustrated. I have had clean time before, for years. I am at my wits end. I have a very hectic job (like you being a nurse). I can't take time off again and I can't live like this anymore. I really appreciate your post and thank you for not judging me. I judge myself. Do you think people get off of Sub? I respect you Sharon and I thank you for responding to me.
Rachel,
Thanks so much for saying that, it means alot to me. I have read posts from other people who say they have used this med and gotten off of it successfully. I have never used it, so have no first hand knowledge. I wish only the best for you and would never judge you because I have been where you are now. The battle to quit pain meds is so very hard. Just take it one day at a time. My prayers are with you.
God bless,
Sharon
