Good Morning to Everyone.
The Man in the Glass is something that has helped me in recovery it reminds me of the time I was at St John of God Hospital Richmond. (Its a Rehab or Recovery Centre for Alcoholics.)
Part of group therapy one afternoon was to go back to our rooms and to look in the mirror and say some positive affirmations .Well at the time I was about 9 days without a drink and not to sure how I was feeling and when I looked in the mirror and for the first time saw the person I had become the alcoholic it was like that Linda Blair movie The Exorcist .my head almost twisted of my shoulders.
For the first time I saw this disease alcoholism and it frightened me the person I was looking at wasnt the person I thought I was this disease is Cunning Baffling and Powerful and it lies.
The good thing today is I dont believe those lies. Today if the disease says One drink wont hurt you or This time it will be different or your feeling good now maybe your not an alcoholic on an on I dont believe the lies because I am on a program for living and I know I never had one drink (maybe one hundred if I could.) and it never was any different in the past it only got worse so why would it be different now.
Today through the grace of God as I try to understand Him and the AA program I can actually stand in front of that mirror without my head wanting to detach it self from my body and I can say your o.k. you might have a head only a mother could love . lol but at least your trying to do the right things in life today and if you cant help anyone a least you try.
What a great feeling to be comfortable with yourself with God and those people around you. I know who I have to thank . God as I try to understand Him and the program of Alcoholics Anonymous.
The Man In The Glass
When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day,
Just go to a mirror and look at yourself,
And see what THAT man has to say.
For it isn't your father or mother or wife
Who judgment upon you must pass;
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one looking back from the glass.
Some people may think you're a straight-shootin' chum
And call you a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you're only a bum
If you can't look him straight in the eye.
He's the fellow to please, never mind all the rest,
For he's with you clear up to the end,
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend.
You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years,
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you've cheated the man in the glass.
