To Silent Partner

Hi - I am new to this post but a quick reading leads me to believe that you may have a few ideas/ knowledge/expertise with sub. I have been on it for over a year - I have decreased from what I was on before - now I am on about 4 8mg tabletsa day - I have a chronic pain issue - trigeminal neuralgia and am trying to use it for that as well - any thoughts on long term use and if it can really be used as a pain killer, i.e. if I have a bad attack of the tic - can I use more for pain - thanks for your time
Hi tallgirl,

Sub (buprenorphine) was first developed as an opiate analgesic (pain killer) for strong pain. Because it is long-acting it was deemed to be safer than other opiates like morphine and addiction was much less of an issue. So it was first used for pain and is still prescribed for pain.

Later it was found to also have opiate blocking characteristics. If you take too much buprenorphine (32mg plus) or if you take other opiates on top of the buprenorphine, its opiate blocking characteristics step in and start to make the user feel lousy. As a detox drug, its long acting acting properties mean tolerance doesnt build like other opiates, addiction is less of an issue, and compared with other opiates it is easier to come off.

For opiate addicts who have a chronic pain problem, buprenorphine can be extremely effective. There are members here who take sub for pain and to manage their addiction.
