My Dr. has prescibed me a dosage of 80mg of oxycontin twice a day( total 160mg's a day). Does anyone know the toxic levels of this drug? I am concerned with overdosing. Is there a maximum level a Dr. can prescibe by law?

Dear Kathy, if your really worried call your doctor or even the pharmacist they know all about drugs and levels, but seriously a doctor is not going to over dose you, im know youll be fine a little high but fine. also fyi getting off of oxys is sooooooo hard the withdrawl are so servere,i know i went through it cold turkey 3 weeks of pure hell. i hope that i helped you keep in touch. mitzy.

I was only taking 30 mg twice a day, she is right the withdrawl is terrible with a capital T, it was the worst time of my life, but I am so blessed that I am alive and sitting here, each day is now a gift to me. I treasue life !!
Please be very careful about taking this drug, it truely is dreadful, the high is great until the tolerance builds, then you need more and more and it does not take long to get addicted.
I almost od'y about three months ago. I ran out of Oxy to early and went to ER, that is when I got introuble, I was already sick with withdrawl and did not realize it, until I ended up in rehab, one month of hell was to follow.

WELCOME CATHY, YOU'VE JUST HEARD THE TRUTH THE WHOLE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH!!!!! OXY IS THE MOST ADDICTIVE CLASS 2 NARCOTIC ON THE MARKET. THAT DOESN'T LESSEN THE EFFECTS ON LIVES OF ALL THE OTHER NARCS THOUGH . BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS DRUG IT CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE COMPLETLY .

THEY are right! You could not be started at 160 mgs a day. If you knew what you were in for you would start back tracking now. An 80 mg and some buffers(not advised) though better than 2 80 would be lower doses get DR. to break your script from 2 80 mg to 1 80 2 -40 a day and bring yourself back.I know people who function normally on these things and hopefully you can, I cannot but wishing you luck. Look back on your life and question your resolve (hopefully you are not on oxy for cancer) because the rest is about to become a blurr the next time you look back. Kiss your family good bye. Whatever you do, DO NOT break these in half. They are designed for time release and once you've fast paced them a few times look out. 1 80 mg should last for 12 hours.
I've heard that they only give that high of a dose of OC to people with cancer, etc.. Is this correct?
No cancer here but bad back, they give to people who have advanced up the opiate food chain as I call it, started with say percocette , supeudols, a low grade opiate with time has to be increased to be effective as a tolerance is built up. Up the ladder in mgs of oxycontin, 10, 20 40 80 tolerance takes time if you are not chasing a high, just use for pain relief, the problem with this drug is it is prescribed for people with chronic pain, kind of like a mask of your continuous pain. Some chronic pain people live a wonderful life with these used as directed and take control of their lives where others like me had the drug take control of my life, it took time I was no puppy, but now I would describe myself as a p**** thanks to the wonder drug I was prescribed by a addictionologist who thought i was taking too many percs and this was just the ticket. I'd like to punch his ticket about now. That it may work for some I'm sure but that's not why I am here. If it sounds like too much it is:) That had to be a boost no way Kathie was a new opiate subscriber.
