Drug Uses
Tramadol is used to relieve moderate to moderately severe pain. It also may be used to treat pain caused by surgery and chronic conditions such as cancer or joint pain. Tramadol works by decreasing the brain's perception and response to pain. It also reduces the size or magnitude of the pain signal passed from one nerve to another. This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
How Taken
Tramadol comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It usually is taken every 4-6 hours as needed. It may be taken with or without food. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Tramadol exactly as directed. Tramadol can be habit-forming. Do not take a larger dose take it more often, or for a longer period than your doctor tells you to.
Warnings/Precautions
Before taking Tramadol, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease; liver disease; or a history of alcohol or drug dependence. You may not be able to take Tramadol, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above.

Great job bob!!
Just to supplement Bob's excellent info., here's another bit on Tramadol and drug dependence which I posted a while back on another thread (taken from a Health/MD site):
" Drug Dependency
This drug has potential for abuse. Physical dependence and withdrawal symptoms upon abrupt discontinuation can occur. Tramadol can reinitiate physical dependence in patients that have previously been dependent on, or chronically using other opioids. Psychological dependence as well as tolerance can also occur. Use with caution and avoid high doses. Tramadol is not recommended for use in these patients."

Hi, if you have had dependencies with other pills, I wouldn't recommend it. I have been taking it for 4 months, and have found it to be not so safe for an addict..
It does work on the pain, but can have withdrawl symptoms if taken over a long period of time....

littlebeach I so wish I was down to what you take.I'm tapering little by little but its like 1 step forwards 2 steps back. The Drs are so good for giving us these new drugs only to find out later how bad they really are...mj
Hi Mollyjean,
You've posted a lot over the past 3-4 weeks, always supportive of others, but often discouraged with your own inability to taper successfully. We've never talked directly, so I hesitate to write to you now, but I'm concerned ........you seem truly unhappy where you are, you seem to truly want to get off the Tramadol, but it also seems that tapering has not been an effective means to achieve that goal -- and it may be prolonging your use of Tramadol at high doses. Maybe tapering is just not going to work for you -- and from what I can tell, it doesn't work very well for most addicts since trying to "control" our addiction or intake proves futile over time. Have you considered other options for quitting? Maybe it's time to develop a different plan, for your own sake. You may have posted on this before, and if so I apologize. But I am concerned for you.... With Love, M.

Hi none I am thankful for anyone who is interested in helping me in my fight.I agree tapering is not always the best way but I have tried the C/T and after about 12-16 hours I couldn't take it.As far as stopping for good I don't know if I really could.I do have some physical problems so that is why I started with the physical therpay. It is hard I've lived most my life usen anything and I am so use to being I guess high is the word that I don't even know if I would like the person I am not usen.I know your right I should try harder and belive me when I tell you I have a GREAT boyfriend that is trying to help but even he knows its up to me to do the work.I feel as if it is a impossable task.Alot of the times I convince myself that I'm not hurting anyone but myself but then I think whats going to happen to my girls if something happens to me.I was ALWAYS good at helping people so I guess thats why I say what I do on here.I whole heartly feel for people on here and if I help them then I don't have to deal with my own problems.Belive me when I say I know thats not the way to go and all I can do is keep comming to the board(if that is OK )hopefully I will learn from others and put more effert into working harder on myself.Wow I didn't mean to rattle on but you kinda hit home and made me look at this whole issue I have.I would never be upset for anyones input and if you have any good tips I will gladly listen.I thank you for the time you took to address this.....mj
it is not considered a narcotic and is not controled as such, however a friend who is in the medical field says it has the same chemical breakdown as morphine whatever that means. this is what i first started taking and it is what got me addicted in the first place, then it just went down from there to the much harder stuff. so please be careful take them only as directed and then only if you rreally need them

Good advise johnny the devil has many faces and he ALWAYS will sneak up on you...mj
Dear NONE where have you gone I thought we could have a good conversation.I meant what I said if you feel you have anything to say that will help please do.And I look at this this way you haven't spoken with me much if at all but every new person I meet on here is a new perspective(sp)to look into....mollyjean
Molly, tapering is really hard to do. I am like you, I had to be on something my whole adult life...
After the initial shock of sobriety, I think that I like myself better like this. We aren't as numb as we think we are when we are loaded.
You can do it. I couldn't taper off he vics, maybe treatment is needed..
What type of symptoms do you have?
Big hugs to you,
Kerry

Hi Kerry I don't know what you mean by symtons..where my pain is or when I try to stop taking them...mollyjean
Hi MJ,
I wasn't avoiding you. Just left the Board for a while. I'm not sure what to say or suggest, except perhaps, "pray for willingness." It can be a very powerful tool. I'm not very spiritual or religious, but I've used that prayer when I needed the courage and willingness to make a major change. And I think it helped. You're a very sweet person, very kind and thoughtful, but addiction can erode even the best soul eventually. You deserve so much better.
I was just thinking about that old HOW acronym -- you know, Honesty, Open-mindedness, and Willingness. Seems to me like you already have the "H' and the "O," just struggling a bit to get that "W." Maybe prayer can help. With Love, M.
