Unsure

First of all I have been reading these posts for a couple of months after stumbling upon it looking for info on getting off Oxycontin and/or percoset. You all are so amazing, not to mention comforting! My situation is a little diffferent, but if you all don't mind I would like to ask a few questions. First of all I have IC (interstitial cystitus) which is when the lining of your bladder is either covered with ulcers or raw nerve endings. It is terribly painful most of the time and unbearable in a flare. There are SO many theories about IC. I have had this disease for about 22 yeaars with one 5year remission and several 2 or 3 month remissions. However I seem to be in a great form of remission now which is about 3 months and counting! I have tapered off of about 100mgs. of Oxycontin (my dose would range from about 40 to 100 over about 7 years) to 25 mgs 3 times a day. It ihas taken me about 10 weeks. After all this (I am so sorry to bore you with this long story) my question is, could I go on suboxone for a short time and get off this stuff faster? I hate the constipation and just want to feel as though I am finally drug free! I have to be careful as anything could set my bladder off. I had one pain mgmt doc say to just stay at 10mgs 3x a day b/c I may have to go back if remission stops but I want to get off! I really, really want off while I am in remission--I HATE being dependent on anything! I talked to one sub doctor who saidI would be a candidate for it but he recommended I stay on it for 6months--that sounded crazy! Any help would be so great. Please anything?
Hi Irish, and welcome.
I'd be afraid to advise you due to your medical condition. Whatever ideas I might have could be dangerous for you. Also, I don't have any personal experience with Sub. It sounds like you're doing really well with your taper. I hope you find the answers you're looking for.

Kat,
Thank you! You are right--I am afraid the sub may upset my bladder and then everything would be lost!! My taper has gone even better--I am down to 20 mg. of oxycontin 3X a day but sometimes I have to take a 1/4 of one to combat the withdrawal--again to avoid hurting the IC. I appreciate your reply as it is hard to discuss this with many people. I hope all is well with you--everyone on this board amazes me with their kindness and support! Irish
Hey Irish,
I have a very good friend who did a long taper off oxys. She was on an amount that would just boggle the mind. It took her a long time to do it but she was successful and is off of them to this day. She had went through a very serious illness too and her body just could not handle going c/t and she didn't deserve to have to go through such misery anyway. Her Dr. supervised her taper and was really impressed. He told her that unfortunately, all too many only want their meds increased, not to be able to come off them. I know some special people from this board who were able to do it as well.
I tapered myself (not off oxys, although I'm quite familiar with them). People will sometimes say that tapering isn't possible, but it is. It's often difficult. I believe that for stronger meds and especially if there is a health issue of some kind, tapering is a good idea, if a person is able to do it. It sounds like you're one of those people. Good for you! Keep up the good work.
