Urgent Prayer Request

Hi everyone

My sister's son Kevin had an injury (helmet hit his leg) during a football game months back and had a problem with blood clots and a bad infection. The infection reoccurred and he now has blood clots in his lungs. He had come home on Sunday but was very short of breath and had some pressure in his chest. They have him in intensive care (Harrisburg Osteopathic General) on strong antibiotics (for the infection) and blood thinner (for the clots). We are VERY concerned!!!! Kathy said they just did another doppler on his legs to see if there's more clots there that could travel. Please, please keep him in your prayers! He needs them right now and Kathy needs them for strength. I will keep you posted. Thanks so much!

Hi, everyone

My sister said that the doctor was in and he said he feels things are moving in the right direction. He said that he thinks when his heart was racing (it was 130 and his oxygen level was 80%) when they checked him in the hospital) and he was having the tightness in the chest at home, that the blood clot was moving through the heart and ended up in the lungs. He said they monitored Kevin's vitals during the night and they stayed in a very good range. If they hadn't, the doctor said he would have had Kevin transferred to Harrisburg Hospital where they would have been better able to handle his problem. He said he would probably have had to had heart surgery.

The doctor told Kevin that he suspects he has a genetic disorder that causes the clots and that he will probably have to be on blood thinners for the rest of his life. He told Kevin that he football AND baseball careers are over because he could bleed to death with an injury on the thinners. That was very upsetting to Kevin because he loves them both.

Please keep the prayers coming because there could be other clots somewhere. The doctor plans to keep him in intensive care tomorrow yet and if the numbers continue to be good he will be moved on Wednesday. Thanks again so much for your prayers! I don't know what we'd do without your love and support! You are always there for me!

Hi everyone

Thanks for your replies and most expecially your prayers.

There's not a lot to report tonight. The last I talked to my sister today the doctor hadn't been in yet. She did find out from a nurse last night that he has another clot in his other leg (not the one that was operated on). He's on a high dose of blood thinners. He hadn't been moved from intensive care at the time I talked to her. He isn't uncomfortable except for his ankle had a lot of pain last night so they gave him some pain medication for that. My sister wasn't sure what that was from. She said that they have him in the longest bed they have but the bottom of his foot is pressing on the bottom board of the bed. That might be causing some discomfort. For those of you who don't know Kevin, he's a large (not fat) boy. He wears a size 17 or 18 shoe! Your continued prayers would be greatly appreciated. I'll keep you posted.

Hi, everyone

My sister called this morning. She said that Kevin was moved from Intensive Care late in the evening last night BUT her friend (whose husband is a doctor of radiology) called her and told her this is STILL VERY SERIOUS. He said that he would like to see her have him transferred to a hospital that has the facilities to care for him in an emergency because that still could happen. This hospital said that if he had had to have emergency heart surgery he would have to be transferred (so I've been concerned about that). He said that if the clot in the lung would travel to a certain spot in the lung it could be instant death. Also, he asked if they did a doppler in the thighs because often athletes will have some in those big thighs and they are in a more serious location than those in the calf. Kevin's doppler was done in the calf. He recommended that they do a doppler of the thighs and get a pulmonary and heart doctor involved. He also asked that the tests/scans be faxed to him for him to view them. My sister has put a call in to her family doctor to try to get the process moving to have Kevin transferred.

Please keep the prayers coming. We appreciate them much more than our words can convey!!!! I'll keep you posted.

Hi, everyone

Christina and I went to see Kevin last night. His spirits seemed a little better. He was reading a book he received from a friend and was laughing while reading it. Kathy has taken off the entire week so she could be there if help was needed. Kevin isn't good at making things known to the medical staff. He told Kathy that he doesn't tell her everything either.

The doctor said he will be released by Monday at the latest. They do about 9 blood tests a day on the poor kid, but it's good to know they're keeping a watchful "eye" on things. Of course we're still concerned that there could be other blood clots that we don't know about, but the thinners should be working on those too if there are any. When Kathy asked if new clots could be forming, the doctor said that Kevin would have to be from Mars for any more to be forming with all the thinners he is on so that isn't a problem. Kathy said that the doctor told her that IF they hadn't called the doctor on Sunday and Kevin had gone back to school, there's a good possibility that when he went to bed that night he might never have woken up. Thank God they did!!!!

They clean the infection wound and repack it everyday. The staff say it's looking good but it can still make Kathy and Kevin feel faint if they look at it.

Thanks so much for your thoughts, kind words, and prayers!

Hi, everyone

I called my sister Kathy today but she was at the hospital so I didn't hear from her until mid evening. She said that her regular doctor wanted Kevin to have an echo cardiogram before he left the hospital to make sure there wasn't any damage to the heart. That service wasn't available at the hospital over the weekend so he would have had to stay in until Monday for it. The attending doctor said that everything sounded fine when he listened to his heart and that they could arrange to have the echo done from outpatient. He released Kevin today.

Kathy is planning to take him to see his regular doctor on Monday and said that if he is has to go back to the doctor's for any more complications, he isn't going there because she wants him somewhere where he can get emergency heart surgery if needed. One of her friends who is a doctor who lives nearby went in to visit him today and told him if there were three clots...there will be more until they find out what is causing them. They have eliminated the Factor V so far that I know of. I'm not sure if any other possible causes were eliminated.

Thanks for your concern, support, and prayers. Please continue to pray that God sends his angels to protect him from harm until they find out what is causing these clots.

Susan
Hi, everyone

Kevin went to his regular doctor yesterday and he agreed with Kathy and Al that they should do whatever they can to determine what is causing the clots. They are going to start with the echo cardiogram to see if his heart is producing them and check for any damage. Then is going to get a pulmonary doctor involved. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks so much for your prayers and support!

Susan
