Visual Triggers ?

Do you find seeing drugs a trigger? For me personally (not the addict, gfriend of one) it makes me remember a of lot of stuff, reminds of things that have happened related to drugs. Bf says that it isn't a trigger for him.

Just this weekend we have seen a lot of drug related tv, we've been watching the Sopranos and there was a story with one of them and drugs. Then today we went to the cinema and saw American Gangster which was all about heroin smuggling, and also showed people shooting up, quite vividly. (stupid tiny cinema here only has one film on show each week...this heroin one this week and last week - eastern promise....also had a heroin storyline...there is no escape!)

I find watching these type of things really weird and uncomfortable now. Before all this addiction stuff i don't remember being affected by seeing drug films.
i remember a few months back me an neil were watching trainspotting and i was really nervous incase it triggered him to use again when i told him he laughed and tryed to reasure me that it was ok , but i still wonder now if it does give them a twitch and brings back memories of the "buzz" they felt when they were using

Hi Sasha, nice to see ya here.

Newly clean I was obsessed with every movie I could rent or see that was heroin related.............then I took to critiquing them (sp)...........like the Jim Carol film if I am spelling his last name correctly.........."Basketball Diaries"....I was talking to the screen telling Leo DiCaprio he plain s*cked as an actor......and Juliette Lewis wasn't whinning correctly...........I'd seen "Trainspotting" before I ever did heroin and that triggered me to think "Wow, man that gotta be that good ya'd go through all that for a hit".

"Lady Sings The Blues", and "Requiem For A Dream" I could go on and on.....thinking yeah poor Miss Billie Holiday suffered way more in so many unspeakable ways than Dianna Ross could ever portray..........but empathized with poor Jennifer Connely's charachter and thought yep, I could see me tricking my tail out like this poor girl I had all that dope waved in front of me.

So, more like an affinity then a TRIGGER.........and that's just me.........like yeah it's bad and I'm beating it...........I'mma force myself to watch this or maybe it's I wanted to be close to it as I could without doing it???????

Better ya go catch a comedy I think Sasha, but it's a great question.......visually though anything blue the color of dope bags here triggers me...........like candy wrappers from Bubble Yum are that blue and they'll catch my eye...........and I get the sweats and shakey like........your stomach catches a lil knot.............and your head talks and talks and your heart even gets a happy skippey beat..........then ya snap to.

Pay me no mind though cause I'm outta my mind..........sounds like you guys are doing better, Sasha though..........this is good.
Hey girl...I can speak for Tom I guess on this one...he watches intervention and we saw american ganster and i think the same thing " o Sh*t...hes gonna use now." But that hasn't been the case in awhile now...he says it doesnt bother him but being around it in the flesh would be totally different...he still cant come to bday parties where he knows there will be heavy drinking...just plain cant do it...maybe he never will be able to...who knows...but i feel ya on this one! i never seemed to care either way before i met tom about watching drug movies or shows...never phased me...now i get all interested in it...weird! talk to ya soon!
when i first found out about bf's addiction (and still a bit now to be honest) i was obsessed with drug related films and watched loads, lot's i had already seen, but they had meant nothing to me b4. i didnt even remember seeing the drug parts...for example in pulp fiction i remembered the uma thurman part, but had no recollection of travolta taking cocaine IV. But seeing them now i find quite difficult, the graphic part of the needle, i find difficult. but i still want to see them (like that wierd thing when people slow down to see the crash even though its wrong) some of the films i still found commercial but some really made me feel funny inside. Requim for a dream was one of those.

like you Bryn, when my bf had first come back from the detox he went through a stage of watching drug films, so then i watched some with him. With him i saw the one that disturbed me the most....Christiane F - a german film. some of those images have stuck with me.

I find it really hard that - other than the side effects of living with an addict, all the actual drug related parts of the films i have no association with, no connection....whereas for my bf...yes....this i find strange and difficult.

When I see these things it triggers me to remember things, and thats why i wondered if it was the same for others.
I know needles drove the hubby nuts, he would see something like on intervention and would have to leave the room. But this was before he picked that needle back up. While I know this had nothing to do with it, I would love to have been in his head, cause the look on his face was almost of terror, he was sweating and pale, but I bet in his head he was glorifying it all only as he canI think the fear was longing in disguiseI know that is was there in his head long before a tv show, or anything else

I saw trainspotting after the fact and it didnt bug me, only the part where they forgot the babyomg if that didnt say something about what addiction can do Sometime scenes in shows, or parts in books reminds me of watching the kick, but then that is something that I remember with full detail, dates and times, what I saw, what I felt watching. The kick so effected me on every level. Nothing though has scared me more then being there watching. I had to put that into perspective as it haunted far to long.

I was always obsessed with anything drug related. I know in some ways I was looking for answers, not always to the best of questions and then sometimes a workable explanation of what I had seen over the years.
I dont watch intervention anymore, I have no real interest in anything like that, or this new show on VH1 with the rehab stuff.. I think it is that I have no real questions to ask
But then this new show Breaking Bad about crystal meth, on now this I will not be missing

You all have a great day,
Love,
Tina

..For me i see a few things that could be a trigger..tin foil (as i was a smoker throughout my use) and anything silver is probably the main one..drug progs don't really trigger me but when i see people in W/Ds on tv that brings back bad memories..but there is a lot of stuff on tv nowadays that can trigger people into using than there use to be..i think drug/alcohol addiction has become a kind of fashion in some aspects..and there's a lot of people out there who are in denial about their addiction..more like teenagers/young people who go pubs/clubs are becoming alcoholics without realising it ?..cos its more fashionable now to go out and get out off their nut than it use to be..Robbie..
Hi, Sashab

Because of my son's addiction, I can't see a Q-tip without being reminded of it. Crazy isn't it?

Love,
Susan
Hi Sashab

I know what you mean, its weird the things you notice, once you've been affected by someone's addiction. My daughter's not living at home now but i still catch a sickly smell of Heroin in her bedroom, it kinda like creeps in now and again just to remind me - so cruel.

Bloody hell the weirdest is bent spoons, my spoons used to disappear and I'd find them all bent and black where she'd used them to heat up. I just threw them out but now and again I'll pick up a spoon and it'll be bent and its as if I've picked up something red hot because I just want to drop it or throw it.

Also little bits of film or foil coz she used to wrap her stash in these, there are so many things in everyday life that have such a profound affect on us. Something you could never explain to people who haven't been affected by addiction.

Luv Christina x

Dear Christina,

I can relate to the spoon thing as well. Even when I'm putting my silverware away now, I am very aware of whether or not they "fit" together as they should or if they've been bent. I have found some charred ones as well. Sad isn't it?

Love,
Susan
Spoons, most definetly spoons and I think like Bryn, when Im not using, newly sober; ( yes, I have been actually newly sober at times though you wouldnt know from my posts right now) watch every movie I can just to be close to it...comfort or sadistic...hmmmmm... not sure if its a trigger though...more like a blanket
Recently, even coming to the part of Dundee I was brought up in ( all my family live there so can't really avoid it) brings back lots of memories and feelings.. even today my heart started beating faster when the bus turned on the main street, really didn't want to bump into any of my old mates.... Don't feel strong enough to say no. Whats the old saying " out of sight out of mind....."
We went to the cineam again tonight...I Legend... i think the title is in English.....no drugs....but there were several scenes with needles...there is no escape argh!!!!!
Thanks for all the replies here.....all interesting....one thing....what are Q-tips?? maybe its an american thing? but I am not sure what they are?!!
Hi, Sashab

It's a brand of cotton swabs here in the US.

Susan
