I am a dog lover but living in the city, I will only own a inside dog because I do not like seeing dogs on short leashes chained to their dog house because of the leash laws, laws that are needed however. Well I was walking my daughter's Shizu(sic?) and it had gotten dark. We live in the city but this man up the road had a couple of dogs he had to keep in a dog run because of the city ordinance but also because, if they happened to be loose, they would back the neighborhood kids up on their porches when the kids would get off the bus after school and would walk by those dogs.
I was walking our dog and I had turned the corner and the dog I was walking stopped under a street light right in front of the home of those two very mean dogs. I had no idea that the owner had let them loose in his back yard so they could have some time out of their cage. I guess he did it at that time of night thinking nobody would be out.
All of a sudden I heard this man's voice saying loudly "no, come back here". I looked up and all I could see were two sets of shiney white teeth coming staright for me and the little dog I was walking. Before I knew it there were two black, full blooded Chows headed straight for me. I remember my comment well, it was,"Oh! Sh%$!. I wanted to run but my thought turned to the dog and so I took my dog's leash and wrapped it around my wrist very tightly because once that first Chow clamped down on my dog's hind quarters he tried to run and if he had, the Chows would have chased him down and killed him for sure. The owner finally arrived and literally wrestled the first dog to the ground as if he was roping a calf. Then the second one attacked and that is when I reached down and pulled my dog out of the other Chow's mouth. I remember telling the Chow to let go or I would cut his gonads off( well I did not say gonads). He immediately let go. I thought, "this dog speaks english". Until I realized two weeks later after speaking with the owner about the incident, that the dog I was speaking with was the female dog. Then it came to me that maybe she, the dog, speaks english better than I thought. She, I guess assumed when I told her I would cut her gonads off, that I was referring to her male companion.
That is a true story. I was so terrified I had to find some humor in it. It almost caused a relapse and my constipation from Subutex went away briefly.

JW,
Wow that is very scary. Thank goodness you and your dog are okay. Your right about finding humor in it but I am sure you were freaking out when you saw the two dogs.
Sounds like you might need to carry some mace, pepper spray or a basball bat with you from now on. Here is a site that tells you a little about the sprays. It would be easy to carry it on the end of your keychain if you ever should need it.

Jw, that would scare me to death. I walk my minpin twice a day and I am always watching for big dogs. I got some pepper spray from my mailman that I carry all the time. One time two mastiffs ran up to us and scared the heck out of me. I've carried it ever since. But at least you got to clean yourself out LOL
oh my jw, i am so sorry that happened to you, your poor little doogy i feel for him is he ok? to have two huge chows attacking him, i feel so bad for your dog.i always abide by the leash laws and my 3 dogs are never a nuisance nor do they ever run free in the neighborhood.
BUT one night i was enjoying a late summer evening on my front porch with my 3 dogs lying at my feet, no leashes, ouch! late at night like i said never thinking any one would be out, lo and behold here comes a man walking his dog looked like a pit bull mix, my 3 dogs ran off the porch and attacked this poor dog, i was screaming hysterically and my sons came out and helped me to contain my 3 dogs, thank God they were there to help me, this poor mans dog went running off and he is calling her name, i try as well to look for her, i am so worried that this poor dog is gonna get hit by a car in her frightened frenzy to get away from my dogs. i feel just awful and learned my lesson to never unleash the dogs again, the next day the dog owner came by and so did animal control, thank goodness my dogs were current on all vaccines and registration otherwise animal control would of had to take my dogs with them to check for rabies and hold them until any fines were paid, well thank God that didnt happen because everything on my part was legit as far as my responsibility as a animal owner, i would have died a thousand deaths if they would have taken my "children" from me.
the dog owner said the dog was on the front porch when he got home (thank you Jesus) and he checked her body and there were no wounds! thank you Lord again. he did say she had just recovered from a previous hip injury and i prayed that this attack didnt aggravate her condition. i was soooo apologetic to this man for it truly was my fault and assured him it would never happen again.
lol about your constipation problem and since you brought that up tell me what relief have you found as i am SEVERELY constipated from the sub. are you on subutex now instead of sub? how long do you plan on being on i? and if you can offer any help in the constipation department i would glady appreciate it.
ive tried:
prunes
colace
fibersure
zelnorm
miralax
enemas
suppositories
dulcolax
colon cleansing
more fiber in my diet
nothing works except the miralax which is a prescription laxaxtive that i know is not good to be on long term.
i want to do chantrix to quit smoking but am leary to start that as it states one side effect of chantrix is constipation!
i cant even imagine being on 2 drugs at the same time with the same side effect. jewels

I do carry an aluminum softball bat with me now. That night I took the Shizu out of the second Chow's mouth I carried him the rest of the way home. After I got home, I noticed something I have never noticed before. The dog was putting out a very strange odor and when my daughter and her mom came home later that evening the first thing they noticed and commented on was this strange smell.
What was that smell was it fear or adrenalen or something that the dog was giving off? It was really a strange smell.
I tried to check the dog in the area where he got bit. When I pulled is hair back and saw some blood, I started to examine him but as soon as I touched him near the area of his injury he snapped at me like a snapping turtle. I thought great, I just survived two vicous Chows to get the hell bit out of me by a 10 pound dog.
I felt sorry for the dog that night because he would limp real bad and had to be carried up the stairs. The very next day I took him outside because I was hoping he would not be afraid to go for a walk. As soon as I let the dog out that morning to take him on a walk, I was the scared one as he headed right straight back towards that same house.
It was later when I was driving by the guy's house and he was outside and I stopped. I told him that it was me and my daughter's dog that was attacked that night. I already new from his reaction that night that he cared about me and the dog's welfare but he told me that day I saw him and spoke to him that after he put his dogs in their run, he walked the neighborhood trying to see if he could find us we did not know each other. He apologized and I told him I was greatful he wrestled his dog to the ground. I truly believe after the attack that since we lived in the city and the dogs were off their leash, he thought he and his home owner's insurance may be sued. I don't mean to imply that is why he cared. He himself got hurt wrestling his first dog to the ground that evening. Suing never entered my mimd. The ball bat did. I am just glad that my young daughter was not walking with me.
Walking the dog that night is kinda like the disease of addiction. I can be walking along one night and be totally blind-sided by strange happenings or thoughts or run into someone or someplace that will make me think of the pills. Although it is hard, I have to be on guard all the time and take the tools( ball bat) with me everywhere.
Thanks for your concern,
Jw

First of all, I am sorry this happened, it must have been terrifying! If it were me, I would definitely carry mace and/or a stun gun.
I'm not suggesting that you sue the man, but I do think he needs to be held accountable for his actions. I would notify police and make him pay the vet bills. Vicious dogs should never be allowed to roam free, and that man should have known better. I don't care if it was 3 AM. If this incident doesn't "stick" in the owner's brain, the next time it could be a child or a smaller, weaker person. I am glad you maintained your composure enough to save your dog, but will the next person be so quick to react? Some dog owners tend to minimize their dogs' bad behavior, or rest the blame on the victims. Even if he apologized, he may be justifying the whole incident in his mind.
I was attacked by a dog when I was 12 years old. It was a family pet of one of my best friends. I had been around the dog many times before and he had never acted aggressive. One evening he decided to attack me out of the blue, for no reason. He bit my arm and jumped up and bit me on my bottom lip. My bottom lip was almost sliced through from the inside. This required an ER trip, stitches, it became infected, I had to have shots and medication and I have scar tissue on the inside of my lip.
My mother was furious and was going to demand they get rid of the dog. I begged and pleaded with her to just drop the whole thing. I insisted the dog was not vicious because he had never done anything like this before. I was embarrassed about the whole thing. She talked to my friend's mom and they agreed to keep the dog outside any time I was around. Basically, my mom wanted to make a big deal out of it, but ended up not doing so.
A few weeks later the dog bit someone else (another teenager) on the face, for no apparent reason. Her injury was less severe and her parents didn't make an issue out of it either. Soon after that, the dog randomly attacked a child, a friend of the family. She had to have surgery to put her face back together. That mother did make a big deal out of the issue and the dog had to be destroyed.
There is most likely some reason(s) why the dog suddenly begn attacking at random, I just don't know the reason. Perhaps someone was abusing it, I don't know. But my point is, even after TWO attacks the owner still did not see her dog as a threat. She still felt at ease having that dog around a small child!
For the simple reason that you don't know what the dog owner is thinking, you should file a report. It's a reasonable thing to do and it might save someone else from a fate worse than yours.
Sometimes it seems like we live in a society where everyone wants to sue for any little thing. So many people are lawsuit happy, looking to get paid if they so much as stub their toe on someones porch. Other, more reasonable and honest people, hesitate to stand up and say anything for fear of looking like a gold digger. I'm not saying this applies to you, JW. I just want to point out that filing a police report is a reasonable and responsible action in a case like this. He knew his dogs were vicious and there is nothing wrong with a good, old-fashioned citation to drive that point home.
I'm glad you weren't injured and I hope your little dog is okay.
