Check out the link below to the article "Addiction Is Brain Disease," which is offered on the Home Page of this website. It offers a useful perspective.

Vinny,
I am very new to this with 8 days clean. I have gone to the link that none4me mentioned many times, and when I first read it--it didnt hit me, and the 2nd time it didnt hit me, and so on..what I do know today is that I have a problem, and I need to get better. I dont really have an interest in how I got it, thats not to say that I wont want to later on--I just have to deal with today--and not take anything.
Again, I am so new to this--and learning as I go.
Good Luck

Just to clarify, I provided the link for informational purposes -- hopefully not to be taken as the final word on addiction as a disease. Vinny, I don't think there is an answer to your question as to whether you're "born" with the disease or not, although many people (including myself) believe that you can be born with a much higher predisposition to acquiring the disease due to your genetic make-up. My extended family is a case study for that..... Hope this helps, M.
Hope I did not confuse anyone, what I was trying to say was that for me I am not strong enough to focus on how this has happened, I just know that I have a problem. As time passes and I learn more about myself, I will be able to dig futher into what makes me tick...for now its an hour by hour, day bu day journey..
Thanks
Thanks
Vinny, from everything that I've read over the last two weeks, it seems that people are born more SUSCEPTIBLE to addiction than others and therefore have a greater risk.
For example, in the book I'm reading now, it talks about how they placed 3 rats in a cage with a bowl filled with liquor (I'm paraphrasing).... One of the rats didn't drink at all, even though it was there the whole time. One of the other rats drank in moderation. The third rat drank all day and night.
When they breeded two of the "alcoholic" rats, that baby automatically ran to the liquor, even with no encouragement or prodding.
We make the choices... addiction is not like cancer where you have no choice in dealing with it or not.... but I think our brains are wired a certain way where some people have a greater risk of being addicted to anything. I've known people who have kept pain pills in their possession for YEARS and can take it as prescribed. Me? I can't even go shopping lots of times because I buy everything that I see. I'm addicted to everything
If you have a parent or grandparent who was addicted to something, you are also at a greater risk
