Hi everyone. I am new here. Tried to discuss my problem with my doc and he flat out refused to refill any scripts, just cut me off cold turkey. Was hell for about a week, then resorted to buying off the street....very expensive and can't keep this up financially. Boss, family, coworkers have no idea about my problem. I've been struggling for years on and off but have been on them since March of '04 pretty consistently following knee surgery. It took a lot of courage for me to go to my doc and I was a little taken aback by his response. Thought of going to ER, but would they admit me against my will, inform local law enforcement? I really want to stop but need medical detox without going to a rehab. Any advice?
I doubt that they will locate law eforcement. Have you checked with a chemical dependency place in your area?

I am curious what made you go to the streets.. was it the withdrawls or the mental cravings.... if you were off them for a week then the worst of the withdrawls should have been gone.... and NA... support groups can help with the mental stuff...
yes you should definately be proud ourself for telling your doc... it is a big step... but you need to sit down and evalute what you really want. Recovery takes a lot of work... it is hard but it is worth it... being free from all the obsessive thinking and using... it is a commitment. it is said that if we put half as much energy into getting clean as we did as not than recovery is a snap well there is some truth in that...
one really important thing is this get honest with yourself first ... and get humble... and you cant do it alone... I dont know why your doc reacted that way... tapering usually well most of the time doesnt work so maybe he reallly did you a favor... I know that is hard to hear right now but ..... anyway... go to an NA meeting.... just listen you dont have to be totally clean to go.. you will find that you are ssoooo not alone... we are moms dads.. docs and lawyers... your priests....your teachers... your nieghbors... ect...
when I found out I wasnt the only one I was soo relieved I just sobbed... I found strength and courage in NA...
just my two cents... give your self a break and a gift ... recovery...
God Bless you

Hi KL:
Just curious. Was is your "primary care physician" that treated you like that? Do you have an orthopaedist? Was it him/her? Perhaps, you could seek an appointment with any one of your other docs, if you have them and just try it again, not to get more meds, but to have legit, compassionate medical assistance and surveillance for your w/ds and recovery.

It was my primary care (the doc who had, for the most part been prescribing the percocet) who stopped my scripts. I do think that in the long run he was doing me a favor. You are right, the worst of the physical symptoms were over (the night sweats were the worst) so I guess it was the fatigue and mental need that sent me to find more. I know this is not practical thinking but the stuff just gives me so much energy that I can (and want to do) 10 x what I can normally get done in a day. Ugh. Thank you for your replies. I had no idea if any would read or respond.
HELLO I HAVE DEALING WITH ALOT LATHLY SO ALL I HAVE TO SAY YOUR ON THE PATH DEAR GO FOR IT YOUR DOING THE RITE THING GOD BLESS YOU YSPEARING
KL..most of us know where you're coming from. You're not alone. I'm really disappointed in your Dr. Time to switch docs. Ok, so he did you a favor by not prescribing anymore but he should have supported you through withdrawals and given you information on support groups and where to go from here. The problem with the medical field is that they are sadly misinformed on addiction. Very few "get it". Mine has known for 20 years that I was addicted and still prescribed whenever I asked. Not his fault, I own it, but geesh..you'ld think he'd be a little concerned about malpractice.
Anyway, get your phone book out and look for an addictionologist or just start calling and ask if the dr. deals with addiction.
If you can get through the w/d for a week once, you can do it again... but you need support and face time with people who know what it feels like.
Hope this helps..

Thank you Cowgirl. Your words have given me hope and desire to seek a doc who can help me..Kelly
Hi everyone. I have been searching on the internet but cannot accurately find a physician in my area who deals with addicitions. Can anyone recommend a website where I can search by state (without paying $39.95 for a background check on the physician!) Just want their name and phone number to call. Thx
I'm not sure that the internet is the way to go..can you just look in your local phone book and start calling? You would be annonymous....
