Why Do I Read So Much Bad Stuff About Methadone

I was here before but left when all I heard about taking methadone was negative. I am @ 80mg a day and it helps with my pain from many (9) back operations and keeping me off hydro pills in multi hundreds a month. your comments please. I need to hear from other users. Thamks
I was a methadone user for pain also. It took control of my life. I became someone who didn't care, was numb to whatever went on in my life, let things go, now I have bills to get caught up on cuz I just didn't care.
Don't get me wrong, I lived my life and was always going, doing things I wanted to do,( spending money when I should have been paying bills cuz it made me feel good outside since I was feeling sick inside) and not caring about the others. I didn't laugh like I use to. Then when I was getting low I would anxity attacks of running out and being scared.

I still have cronic pain but have decided to go about it a differnet way.
I find myself laughing all the time now about the smallest things. My eyes are clear, my face is clear, and now I want to go and do things as a family and with others. Its nice to hear people say they can really see a difference in me after just over a little over a month being off of them. And I don't have the anxity issues of running out. That was the WORST!!

Everyone has their own feelings about it, and I know it has helped many folks out. And yes it helped get rid of my pain, but in the meantime it ruined who I was. And I wanted me back.
Because methadone is an opiate and this is an addiction RECOVERY board. Hopefully people are here to get off of opiates eventually and get their lives back. Methadone takes away your life just as well as hydros and every other pain med. If you are doing it for pain and as prescribed, then there's nothing negative to say, but if you are abusing (and most addicts eventually will) then it's not the answer for your pain.

Just my opinion.

PS..nice to see you back.
Welcome back.I personally just think that the suboxone is much safer as when I was on meth I took alot of stuff to still get max effect and had a hard time not taking anything with it because I did not get in trouble if I has dirty urine on the subs if you come up positive you are at risk to be kicked out of the program and the truth is I did and could still feel the effects of other opiates whenI was on meth it just did not work as well for me as the subs plus I burned holes in everything and that is so dangerous for me as I have a child I guess what works for some does not worlk for others A positive meth story just is less common these days ya know.Anyway dont take it personal if it works for you that is great but are you planning on staying on it for the rest of your life?
Dear Grampa
I Will not knock your choice to be on methadone, on the other hand, It's actually a worse drug in my opinion than what you were probably taking.
My husband although a pain in the @ss at times, Has had 6 MAJOR back surgerys...........Aortic anurisum surgery............double by-pass surgery
Part of his colin removed.....Plus more, this is over the course of 30 years
He was prescribed Percocet 5/325 & never abused them, to this day
With so much new technoledgy out there, accupunture amoung so many other things.......Have you ever looked in to pain alternatives??
I am noticing now here in Fl. Doctor's are writing Methadone for anyone now, to substitute Percocet for anyone who has been on opiates for a long time, My opinion is the Dr. are trying to cover their own @sse's so when the D.E.A Comes calling, they can justify it by saying they are trying to get their patients off the other opiates they prescribe year after year, for ANY kind of pain. It will all backfire & then where will you be??
I'm sorry about your pain, truly........but investigate alternatives........because if the day comes when your Dr. stops giving methadone, You will think your in hell tring to get off that sh*t........Good Luck
Just my opinion

Hey, have missed you:

When I was addicted in my 30's, we had a Methadone Clinic here in town. People would go every day with a locked box and get their dosage. It was for people trying to get off opiates but people in line would talk and a lot of them just used adding to what they were taking at home. They would do randon urine test but only threaten to make them leave - $10 a day, that adds up - I started with th lowest dosage so I wouldn'yt have so far to drop, peole in line (we all talked) thought I wsa crazy b/c they would start you out at the highest dosage.

It did help my pain but it was a drop of pink liqid and it made me so nauseated, I just couldn't do it. That was $70 a week and some had been there for more than 5 years. After you were there a while, they would give the ones a week's worth who had clean urine. One person drove from TN to SC once a week. I asked one girl in line one day (about my age at the time) how do people pay all of this money for so long. I was used to my drug card for my Lortabs. She said it was a lot cheaper - she had a $500 a day habit and tracks on her arms. She said she would do "anything" to get it. She was so sweet, just made a wrong turn somewhere like we all do. Her new boyfriend would send her a $10 money order every day - he knew she would spend it on drugs otherwise, she told me that she knew she would, too.
I'm glad iit made me sick. It had to be stronger than the Lortabs and going every morning between 6 and 7:30 or noon - 12:30 - every day except Sunday. That was like another part-time job. On Sat, they would give you Sunday's dosage. That's why we had to have the little lock boxes, had to take them every day though, even if we took the dosage in front of them.
More guilt. I never told my husband about that. Such a waste of money.
A good month's worth.

It's closed down now, don't know how long ago - when we go to our small hospital, we always pass where it was.

Don't know what happened to all of those people. It was dead of winter and a lot of them walked to get there and like I said, a lot came from far away, TN was just the one who had the longest drive.

So, you could see how shocked I am to see they are treating pain with it. I thought it was to get off pain pills.

Love,
Jean
Hi grandpa.I can only speak for myself on this.Im on sub for addiction & pain issues,.I myself dont abuse what I have now.For the first time in my life Im taking just what my Dr says.I use to buy methodone off the street & I know for myself that I would keep usen more & more cause thats what I use to do.So as long as the Sub takes care of my pain issues ill be content & safer...mj
Hi MJ
Wanted to jump on again & say thanks for your thoughts of me while I Was in the hospitol, so appriciated, believe me
I Liked what you said to Grandpa
I'm sorry for anyone who thinks Methadone is the answer, he says he takes 80 mg of meth, If I'm not mistaken, & I could be, that is the equivalent of about 15 or 20 percs per day..........as I Said before, in the old days, Methadone was only given at clinics, you had to show up every single day, & be monitored
Those days are long gone, The dr. here in Fl. are writing scripts of between 90 & 120 a month, in some cases more.....they pass them out like M&Ms and all you do is show up 1 time a month to get your script, so all the DR'S have done is make a trade off,
My question to Grampa is why did he change your meds? I Really am curious

gramps,

i think the negative comes from the abusers or people who dont have pain issues and want off and cant seem to find thier way out. i havent heard all bad about it. i say dont let what you read negative from others effect what is working good for you. everyones recovery is thier own personal journey and no one has a right to judge, its between you and your god. as long as you are living a happy healthy productive honest life i see no problem. you are doing what works for you. no one can take that away from you. there is no need to question your method. its worked for you this far and you arent abusing it. so i say rock on.

Subutex is generally a better option than Methadone. Subutex hasn't proved to be as safe during pregnancy but I am sure it will be proven in good time.

When it coems to heroin addiction, methadone is just as effective as buprenorphine but of course most addicts report that buprenorphine is a much nicer drug to take.

In terms of pain pill addiction I would say that methadone is an awfully drastic step to take and that for anyone who was started on methadone before subutex became available, then they should switch over.

Subutex (buprenorphine) is alot easier to come off than methadone, and for those on maintenance therapy it will help manage chronic pain as well.
Grandpa,
Hey happy to see you back here... I hope all is well with you.. I was on methadone back in 2000 and was on it until Aug 2002. I never abused it and it was prescribed for legit back pain. I probably didn't need to be put on methadone but at the time I just went along with the doctor's orders. I really didn't research the drug first and didn't quite know what I was getting myself into. That was a bad mistake on my part... I did an at home detox and weaned myself down to 2 1/2 mgs a day before I finally quit. I had a pretty hard detox to say the least. I won't go into details right now but I have never experienced so much pain in my life. I had it rough for a while but I got through it and so will you if the time should ever come...

I know others have their share of horror stories when it comes to methadone. I wouldn't read to much into them including mine if you need them for pain..Just follow your doctor's advice and if the day should come when you want to quit, I would seriously look into switching over to suboxone. That is if there ever comes a time you want off methadone and you get down to 30 mgs and are able to do it. That is just my opinion..

I couldn't imagine having 9 back operations. It sounds like you are taking methadone for legit pain and you need it.... Weather this is an addiction recovery board or not if you need the pain meds for quality of life then don't worry about it.... Your doing what you have to do and that's all that matters..

Glad to see you back and hope to see you posting more often. Take care! Rae
Thanks everyone for your opinions and the wellcome backs. Nice to read what
you all said, thanks again. I will learn more about that sub a few of you mentioned. I've never heard of it.
Before methadone I was on 400 10mg hydros a month for a couple years, no pain relief, no kiddin and when I went to my Psychiatrist he put me on meth.
Finally had some pain relief and even though I may take an extra once in awhile it's not like my hydro days. I'm lucky, my wife of 33 years gives me my dosage.
Hope to hear more from you folks.
