Good Morning ALL, This is Big Bear, I am now 17 days clean. IT has been very difficult but I am seeing each day better.I am going in the hosp. FEB 28 to have both hips replaced. I am afraid of being put back on narcs. after the surgery. Coming off the methadone after 10 yrs. has been the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I am a easily addictive person. Any suggestions welcome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Big Bear

I don't have any suggestions but wanted to welcome you to the board and wish you luck on the surgery. Congratulations about being able to get off the methadone too. I can understand your fear.
Maybe I do have a suggestion, kind of what I've read on this board so many times. If you need the pain medication maybe you can give them to somebody to hold for you and make sure you only get the recommended dose? Well, I'm sure others will be around to give you other suggestions. Hang in here.

Congrats on the 17 days clean Big Bear. That's great news!
Like Liz said have someone you can trust hold any medication you may receive. Be upfront with your docs too, so that if you do need pain meds they only prescribe what is absolutely necessary for pain managment.

Hi Bigbear congrats on your achievment hun are the hospital well aware of your likly addiction? might be a good start to make enquirys now so you can get the pain med you need under supervision. good luck with your opp and hope things go well for you please let us know how it goes hun ilbe thinking of ya jackie xxxx

i too am on methadone for pain mgt. i have been on it now for about 2 years. did you just quit all at once or did you taper down. if so did the taper help or was it still as bad. i came off for 13 days and it was pure hell i had so much pain that i went back on and am now tryint to come off slowly. i was on about 10 to 12 10mgs. pill a day and am now down to 2 1/2 per day so i am doing better than i have in a long time but i want to get completely off then see if the pain is that bad any suggestions in how to do this is appreciated

There is a dr Kamlet on miami beach who is one of the best detox dr around. When I spoke to him after doing ibogain he said if anything ever happens that I have to be on meds inhospital to have dr call him as he said( he is also in recovery) that liquid dilaudid is the best medication to use on an addict as it comes out of your system very clean. His first name is Jeffery and you can try looking him up he specializes in private detoxes and is in charge of all the medical profesional who have been caught using and he helps get there lisence back I will try to find his number for you or you can try looking him up in south beach and see if your dr can call him. He said every patient that has done this hasnt relapsed but the ones who dont always do Just a suggestion. Best Ray

I am so proud of you! I saw a post that maybe someone should hold your pills and give you the recommended dose as you need it. I agree, I think that would be the best idea. Most important, take care of yourself. I will be praying for you that you have a safe and speedy recovery. Please post back when you can to let us know how you are doing.

Congrats on your 17 days clean!!!! That's awesome. I just wanted to tell ya to make sure to talk to your docs about your concern. My Dad had both his hips replaced twice. He has done well both times. He thought he would not need his meds. but he could not do his PT without them. And PT is vital to how well you will do. So hang in there, talk to your docs now. I wish you the best in your surgery.

I have no, advice instead a question. You siad you had been on methadone for ten years. Did you ever feel normal? My husband has only been on it for 3 months and so far it is no good!

I echo what Jim and others have said. I had knee surgery last September when I had about 4 months clean. I was prescribed percs to take home with me. I gave the scrip to my wife, who doled them out AS PRESCRIBED. Imagine that, as prescribed. lol I don't think I'd ever done that in my life. Seriously, having tried -- unsuccessfully -- to control my own meds after injuries or surgeries during the past 13 years, this is the ONLY way that hasn't led to relapse for me. I needed to give over the control..... a necessary admission of powerlessness, for me at least. Good luck, M.

Sometimes there is a nescessity....have you checked into support groups?
