Tim,
52 degrees? You are insane. Totally bonkers. You couldn't pay me to go into water that cold.
You know, I've been rethinking this whole chatroom thing. It occurs to me that the last time there was an open chatroom associated with this board, it ended up with death threats being issued and the cops being called in.
So, we'll need you to be a bouncer... In your Elastomax Batwing. Yes. That should do nicely.
Oink.
LOL, YGM

I remember that. What do you think I'm basing my opinion on?LOL
Try it again though and see what happens. It's no big deal.Either it will work or not.
Yes....the water was cold!!!!!!!! I'm still looking for the "family jewels".

You should have locked them in the glove box with your wallet and watch.
Shantel,
I would imagine that a chatroom manager could eject someone from the room, or gag them for a period of time. If things got too bad, they could probably just close the room for the night.
There are also ways for a manager to control who is allowed to speak at a given moment, so that everyone has to wait their turn, LOL, whether they want to or not. It depends on the software and about that, I know nothing.

Dear Addicted Abby, You are fired. I ended up going to work all day. So much for googling. LOL Shantel
Just to clarify, in these chatrooms, there are channel operators (I would be one of them and we could get other volunteers) and there would be channel guidelines just like there are for this board. The operator or ops as they are called has the power to kick or ban someone from the chat if they violate the guidelines. The group also has power in this decision and it's all very democratic (and well monitored if it's done right).

This came up once before and some emailed the mods asking for one...it was a BIG NO from them. They felt there would be way too much hate and discontent with no way to moderate....I think we're all adults and should be able to make that choice ourselves.
Tim,
I was just asking you more about your thoughts. I just found your opinion interesting.
That's all...

Wow. That's really interseting about the MODS. I don't really understand what the big deal is - just the fact that it's in real time (which is a big difference in terms of conversation, but not necessarily in terms of moderation).
Well, it will be an unofficial chat room, moderated by community members but not "affiliated" with the board. That seems like a reasonable solution. No liability for them, and we, being adults, can make good decisions and act appropriately and if we for some reason CAN'T, we can moderate that.
Just funny that the moderators are so (or were) oopposed.

I already have a chatroom-
Inside my head...and it talks all day long.

Hahahahah.... I almost justpeed my pants.
LOL @ Danny and KeeKee...yep, I relate as well.
You know, IM'ing people is a good way to communicate in real time too. I think I missed something though...have you set up a chat room already for the people of this board?

why do you think that msn, yahoo, and other major domains have done away with chat rooms? there is a major legal reason why and i would not want to be held liable in way, shape, or form what could transpire in a chat room.
we had a chat room on pills anonymous until october, 2006 when msn made the decision to close them. as well intentioned as the majority of the members were in keeping things on track, one never really knows who one is talking with over the net in a chat room. after the chat rooms closed on msn and yahoo, a few of the PA members tried to start a chat with msn messenger, but we had no way of knowing what was going on in those chats. links were being posted on the PA website to join in on chats. although the members who were initiating these chat announcements, i believe their hearts were filled with pure intent and had recovery discussions at best interest; there was really no way to keep lurkers or non-members out. had msn happened to join in on one of those messenger chat that were linked on our site and some illegal behavior was going on, we could have been shut down immediately without warning and held liable for any harm done to someone.
how would you advertise your chat room that you may be considering opening, sp? here? do the owners of this site really want to be liable for links posted to a chat room here? this is a hot topic in cyberlaw right now. and from first hand experience, as i acted as part of the defense team recently of a person who got caught in a police sting, i'd be very, very, careful today as to how much consideration i would give to starting chat room. i saw a family's lives ruined from something that started out as just a friendly conversation with an online acquaintance. it escalated within one week to the point where the person who was caught in the sting (because that is what it was) was charged and found guilty of multiple felonies.
you might want to contact the moderators of this site before making any further plans about a chat room generating from this site. you might want to consider contacting an attorney who is knowledgeable in cyberlaw too, if this is an endeavor you think you would like to take on.
i voted i would never use it and that is sad, because there was a time years ago when 12 step meetings and recovery chats were really neat to attend online. as dylan once sang...1964 i believe...the line it is drawn; the curse it is cast; the slow one now; will later be fast; as the present now; will later be past; the order is rapidly fadin'. and the first one now; will later be last...for the times they are a-changin'.

I wondered the same thing Sammy...the liabilty and I don't think the mods here would be too keen on it.
I didn't realize that that's why MSN shut down thier chat rooms. Hmmm.

well - all one has to do is google yahoo chat rooms and cyber crimes and they will see. i just heard on the news a few minutes ago where facebook had some perv who made contact with a teenager on a message board and it ended up that they met in person. the teenager was sexually battered - so now it just isn't limited to chat rooms.
not all the sickies are locked up! and the net is free reign for many.
it sure is sad.

Actually before finding this site I spent very little if any time at all on line, unless it was work related. I didn't even realize that MSN no longer had chat lines. I know that alot of scary things can go down in those rooms....it has opened up a whole new forum for the criminal mind!
It really is sad...there could be a chance here to help someone who was at the end of thier rope and needed to talk.
All kidding aside, I think emotions sometimes tend to run a little high here..people in the middle of withdrawl, personal problems, asking drug "advice" or whatever and I think it probably could get a little out of hand..and it leaves open to people trying to source drugs..or spammers trying to sell drugs..all you need is one fake spammer joining and when traffic was "high", putting out a phone number or URL advertising drugs or whatever..not that they arent readily available anyway but if someone is the least bit tempted or going through withdrawls or whatever and an 800 number flashes..big problem..and it's going to happen too..don't think the OLP don't look at this board because they do.
That's a really good point Danny..didn't think about Spammers. You know, people could sign up as someone else too or a fake idenity and then you wouldn't know who you were talking too or who was lurking.
No thanks.
