hi
this is my first pain issue on sub, i have a horrendous toothache.
i call my dentist, he isnt in on sat, call the emergency number, in the mean time i have taken ibuprofen and tylenol, hasnt touched the pain, i tell the emergency dentist about sub, ( he doesnt know about it) i say, research it, call me back, he calls me back and says that he spoke with a pharmacist and they agree it would be ok for me to take ulltracet? generic for tramadol, i say i dont think thats ok for me to take because i have seen on a forum i go to that people have said this drug was addictive, he says no, its ok, so i am prepared to get this script filled, i get another call from this dentist and he says the pharmacist called him back and it does contain some opiate properties!!! i am glad i found out, wouldnt that drug have caused me to go into withdrawals? i mean the same way they explain how you have to be in withdrawals (off sub for like 24 hours) before one can take a pain pill? something about the drug throwing off the sub off your receptors? jewels
Julie,
I'm sorry your tooth is hurting. Can you call the doctor who perscribes you the sub and see what he has to say? I just don't really know much about it. Have you tried that Orajel tooth gel? I know it doesn't work terrific, but it might help until you can get into the dentist. I hope you feel better soon.

Julie,
I agree with Michelle. Call your sub doctor -- he must have experience with patients on sub and in pain. Give the oragel a try, too.

Julie,
I am a cronic pain sufferer as you know. My Addiction Specialist told me if I was in severe pain while taking suboxone to go the ER.
Emergency Rooms can give you pain medication that will work with suboxone. They are trained to handle your situation.
No opiate will work for pain with suboxone in your system. That's one of the reasons for taking it.
Don't try and "cure" yourself, get to the ER Julie. I know it's "just a toothache" but Suboxone is powerfull stuff and it's nothing to fool around with.

I'm with the Michelle and Gina, try the Orajel first and then if it doesn't work, go to the ER.

Becky,
Seriously OT. I put Oragel on my eyebrows before I pluck 'em. Eyebrow plucking is then painless.
Your right, she should try it first, ON HER TOOTH and if it doesn't work it would be ER time.

I just learned something.
Thanks, I will now buy Orajel for my eyebrows.
Never too old to learn.
Thanks again,
Becky

Me too. Never thought to try orajel on eyebrows, i believe i will give that a try! thanks for the info. You just learn something new everyday!
oral gel on eyebrows!!!! i love it! i dont pluck but i wax, i will try that.
i have already tried all these options and its not that i dont accept your advice but this how it goes:
1. i hate my sub doctor, i want a new one but cant find a sub dr in my network, he doesnt return calls in emergencies, like when i had that barbaric endoscopy, and we needed advice on sedation w/sub. and last visit when i asked him how i would deal with pain for a future surgery (carpal tunnel) his exact answer to me was i dont know, then he thought about it and said, in so many words deal with the pain, so he is not anyone i could turn to for this situation, sad isnt it? but he is my lifeline for the sub and i have to suck a** because i will go into withdrawals without the sub.
i love most of all my doctors, but not in the psychiatric field, if you were to search my name below and look for the " not treated fairly post," on april 12, it will explain what i mean.
2. i have considered the er, but in my past experience, no one knows what sub is or what meds agree with it.
3. is tramadol/ultracet a narcotic?
4, oral jel wont work because the pain is in the jaw bone!
5. what pain medication is it that you posted works with sub?
this is kinda of a scary situation, i mean the sub has worked wonderful for me, but what if i were in a true life threatening situation? the md's are not educated on this drug, when i was wheeled into the operating room for that endoscopy, the staff were googling sub on the computer, trying to find out how to sedate me safely!!!!
i need to eduacate myself more in this case, thats why i posted this topic, because i have learned so much from your guys, thanks for your input.
i did go and buy some liquid advil gel caps, i have heard from others that this works well, so we will see, i have taken so much acetaphenimen and ibuprofen today, upon the dentists advice, he said i could take 2- 500 mg tablets of tylenol and 2 - 200mg advil together to equal a narcotic, but it hasnt helped. i will try to suffer this out til monday when my dentist is in. jewels

Jewels I followed your post yeaterday and while I have no advice I just wanted to see how you were doing today. i hope some better
Hi honey,
Stay away from all opiates period. They won't do much if anything for the pain. Remember my broken foot. What about prescription Motrin? That is what I take and took for my foot after a few days.
You need to be real careful right now. I know you are in a tough spot regarding your marriage so now is not the time (not that any is) to mess with narcotics of any sort. It may be that that situation is playing tricks on your brain. Sometimes when we are in tough spots we look for reasons to use. I am not saying that you are doing this...just be aware.
Toothache pain is a biotch....dull it the best you can. Please please please be careful.
Doctors often don't live up to our expectations and when they don't...I say get rid of them. You have gained alot of knowledge on the disease of addiction and don't need some quack giving you wrong information regarding the sub.
Big hugs....you will get through....try the motrin...for some reason it worked real well for me until you see the dentist tomorrow.

Julie - It's sad to read the pain you are in. Maybe I missed it, but is the cause of your tooth ache pain from an abscess? If that is the case, why not go to the ER and get started on some antibiotics now? It will take 48 - 72 hours for them to begin to help; yet once they kick in you should get some relief.
I had to have a root canal a few years back and between Motrin and ice packs on my face, the pain was bearable. The ice packs worked awesome!
Apologies in advance, as I don't know anything about Sub and what pain medications it can interact with that can cause some adverse effects; however, it appears that are many here that do. And as for your sub doctor, if you feel the need to change, I know of one in the Quad Cities area who comes highly recommended...such a compassionate doctor, who is also an addict in recovery. Don't know how willing you are to driving there or if that is a possibility for you, but I will give you his name and if you can't see him, perhaps, he could recommend someone closer to where you live. Drop me an email and I will send his contact info to you.
I'm sending you much white healing light that you will feel better soon.

Julie- try (not shyte) taking a couple of asprins and putting them in the mouth right where the pain is and an ice bag...I know it worked for me once...hold the ice bag in place.
You might of already tried that..if not, try it...don't use tylenol, use regular good old tried and true aspirin.

thanks for all of your suggestions and concerns,
i dont think there is an abcess, when i explained the pain to the dentist over the phone he said sounds like a root canal problem. when i look at the affected tooth in the mirror, it is a crown??? how can a crown hurt? unless its the tooth or should i say the post that holds the crown which is ones tooth, may be thats the culprit?
having diabetes really plays a number on the teeth, i have been to the dentist for so many fillings and cracked teeth.
despite all the stress i am under, i do not have the desire to use, i am proud of myself, as we speak there is a script waiting for a narcotic and i am NOT picking it up, the dentist thought that ultram would be ok to take, i told him no, its a narcotic, he had already called it in when the pharmicist called him back to tell him it was a narcotic, this dentist then told me not to pick up the script and in a few days when they realize i am not gonna pick it up, they will put it back on the shelf or whatever. there is no way i would risk having that narcotic throw me in withdrawals, no way! thats the last thing i need right now. i only have cravings now and then, as long as i am on the sub. xxxooo jewels

Jewels...I have a bad toothache too. It's been a prob for a while. My husband wants me to just pull it b/c it's in the back, i want to crown it again, He just wants the cheaper way out!
help!!! 4 more hours til my dentists office opens! the dentist i spoke to over the week end is the on call dentist, 4 more hours to speak to my dentist!!!! just woke up in terrible pain! this ones a doozy, now what started as jaw pain has now moved to the bottom back molar, left side, its a crown!! must be an infection. i cant even put the slightest pressure on it, at first the heat from my food flared it up, there is no way i could even try to chew anything on that side, i have tried all the self help measures and now oragel, i cant take this for much longer, if its a root canal problem then it is going to take a few days ugh! first i will have to see my dentist for a exam and then he will refer me to the endodontist, that means i wont get relief for a few more days!! i havent taken a narcotic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if i did the sub will throw it off, just posting here about the pain, i am trying to distract myself. i feel horrible. wont be able to work today at the nursing home if i get the appt to see the dentist today, i hope he will take me, sometimes he is too busy, ouch! pain! jewels
