I posted this on another thread, but thought I'd start a new thread with this info
Feel free to add anything additional....
MODIFIED & IMPROVED VERSION OF THOMAS RECIPE
For the Recipe, You'll need:
1. Valium (or another benzodiazepine such as Klonopin, or Ativan). Of these, Valium and Klonopin are best suited for tapering since they come in tablet form. Librium is also an excellent detox benzo, but comes in capsules, making it hard to taper the dose. Ativan or Xanax should only be used if you can't get one of the others and is only a last resort!
2. Imodium AD (over the counter, any drug or grocery store) ** THIS ONE IS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT IS RELATED TO OPIODS IN PROPERTIES WITHOUT CROSSING BLOOD/BRAIN BORDER CAUSING EUPHORIA LIKE OPIES, BUT DOES HELP A LOT WITH GENERAL W/D SYMPTOMS IN ADDIDITION TO THE GI PROBLEMS THAT GO WITH W/D'S!! **
3. L-Tyrosine (500 mg caps) from the health food store.
4. Strong wide-spectrum mineral supplement with at least 100% RDA of Zinc, Phosphorus, Copper, Magnesium and Potassium (you may not find the potassium in the same supplement).
5. Vitamin B6 and B12 caps.
6. Access to hot baths or a Jacuzzi (or hot showers if that's all that's available).
**** There is a natural product sold at WalMart and other places called "Leg Cramps" brand name by "Hylands" that contains QUININE.
I have been told that it works wonders for restless legs / jittery legs that come from withdrawals. ****
How to use the recipe:
Start the vitamin/mineral supplement right away (or the first day you can keep it down), preferably with food. Potassium early in the detox is important to help relieve RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome). Bananas are a good source of potassium if you can't find a supplement for it.
Begin your detox with regular doses of Valium (or alternate benzo). Start with a dose high enough to produce sleep. Before you use any benzo, make sure you're aware of how often it can be safely taken. Different benzos have different dosing schedules. Taper your Valium dosage down after each day. The goal is to get through day 4, after which the worst WD symptoms will subside. You shouldn't need the Valium after day 4 or 5.
During detox, hit the hot bath or Jacuzzi as often as you need to for muscle aches. Don't underestimate the effectiveness of hot soaks. Spend the entire time, if necessary, in a hot bath. This simple method will alleviate what is for many the worst opiate WD symptom.
Use the Imodium aggressively to stop the runs. Take as much as you need, as often as you need it.
Upon rising in the am (on an empty stomach), take the L-Tyrosine. Try 2000 mgs, and scale up or down, depending on how you feel. You can take up to 4,000 mgs. Take the L-Tyrosine with B6 & B12 to help absorption. Wait about one hour before eating breakfast. The L-Tyrosine will give you a surge of physical and mental energy that will help counteract the malaise. You may continue to take it each morning for as long as it helps. If you find it gives you the "coffee jitters," consider lowering the dosage or discontinuing it altogether. Occasionally, L-Tyrosine can cause the runs. Unlike the runs from opiate WD, however, this effect of L-Tyrosine is mild and normally does not return after the first hour. Lowering the dosage may help.
Continue to take the vitamin/mineral supplement with breakfast.
As soon as you can force yourself to, get some mild exercise such as walking, cycling, swimming, etc. This will be hard at first, but will make you feel considerably better.
PLEASE be very careful using any benzos!!!!
I would hate to see anyone trade one addiction for another!!!

sorry it took so long to respond to you post!!
1 mg klnopin is equal to 10 mgs of valium
If you have taken valium before, just use it with that conversion in mind
what was your doc that you are coming off of??
how much were you taking per day??
i can help better if i know that info
with most opiates, you will feel like you have the bad flu for 3-5 days and then it will get better each day after that
my doc was oxy - and LOTS of it!!
oxy in high doses is almost as bad as methadone to detox from
i don't wish that on anyone!!!
keep posting
we will help you thru this
do you have any support at home??
don't be scared
read all of the success stories here - it can be very inspiring....
I'd say lose the benzos and you have an excellent recipe..JMHO.

Are you nuts? Posting on an addiction board, the recipe for taking pills that are addictive and dangerous?
Moderators...come on.
To the new people that are looking for help, please disregard the part about the valium. The rest of it looks like it may be helpful, but always check with a dr before taking anything that might interfer with your medications or health conditions. The L-Tyrosine dose seems really high.

That is very true we really don't need to trade another addiction for another and for someone going cold turkey that is almost like saying come on in just sedate all your feeling and it will be ok get your blanky too.Sorry but its true to me if you sedate it yu will never remember what you don't want to go through again.I am 27 days and went cold turkey off of 10 to 14 lortabs a day for about 3yrs.so it can be done.I would like to think that we don't need this on here were all adults here and can make our own chioces but some look for an easier way out but theres not its just to get them out of you ......Enough said moderators please..........................................................
This is missing one important thing Calcium I didn't see that listed.
If you are done and over withdrawal but still have some aniexty issues from time to time a cal mag zinc combination usually found in one pill should help you greatly....
Now I have to comment on the benzo thing. They are so dangerous and very addictive but I found when looking into treatment options that they are used. Some of the inpatient centers used then the first few days and the doctor that set my husband up for ct at home offered 5 valium and catapress. I was told that for the first few nights it should be ok...the danger in all of this lies with the sleeplessness that is found after the first 5 days you really need to not take anything for sleep including benadryl and even melatonin which by the way may be natural but it will messes with you own ability to produce it hence leaving you dependent on something to sleep....you just have to let your body find its own way.

I must agree there are alot of better non harmful things you can use. Please look at OTC Meds post for more help...mj
Dear Swizzle:
Do you know what the L-Tyrosine does for us? I have it on order from GNC. I pretty much know what others do but not L-Tyrosine. I ordered b/c I didn't see it on website and read where it wasn't to be taken 'til about the 5th day. However they did carry it at GNC.
Also, I did go to GNC - and purchased B-1000 - the salesperson said that it gives you a good litte energy boost if you let it melt completely under your tounge. It works just enough to where I can tell it and I need all the help I can get.
Tomorrow will be my 4th day with no Lorttabs.
Thanks so much for your help.
Jean

Aside from recommending the use of a controlled, addictive substance to detox from an addictive substance, the most important piece of detox advice is missing.
SEE YOUR DOCTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And getting a benzo without a written prescription for YOU from YOUR own physician is ILLEGAL!!!!
Good gracious!!!

Swizzle was trying to be helpful. I did not see anywhere on his post about getting benzo's illegally. We all have the right to disagree with some things that are posted but I sure don't get the impression that this post was as dangerous as some are reacting to. We are all adults(hopefully) and some of us have more militant views than others. I would not advocate anyone not seeing a dr. for w/d's, but I talked to my dr. and he just wrote me a script for some benzo's that I did not take and did not have much else to offer other than recomending NA. I found many more resources from this board and by using my god given brain. I was coming off hydro which is not as dangerous as some things and I pretty much knew what I was getting into with c/t. Not everyone who is an addict will jump ship to a different drug. To assume this is not correct. Yes, it is something to be aware of, but is not the kiss of death. If it helps someone get clean than they should take it (as prescribed). Of course, many do without. In a perfect world we could all get clean in 1 day with out any help.
this is like practicing medicine. are you a doctor swizzle?
many addicts i know have abused more than one drug, whether they admit it or not on this board. in addition to opiates, benzos were my doc. how sweet it would be if i had logged on here when considering detox and seen to take benzos!
there are co-morbidities to consider that some of what is suggested here could cause harm. while detox is a necessary step so one can enter recovery, it's best left between patient and doctor - face to face.
i think you meant well, swizzle, on the other hand i also find this dangerous advice. so tell me, what are you doing to maintain your recovery? that's what i would like to hear. detox is the easy part when you look at the big picture.
hugs -
sammy

Good morning sammy,
Boy, ain't that the truth?
You wrote: detox is the easy part when you look at the big picture.
I don't say that often because when I was in day 3 of withdrawal, if the big picture had hit me in the face, I don't like to think what I would have done. But I think it's important to stress that after the agony of detox when the brain has cleared up and the drugged hopelessness abated somewhat, the big picture is much easier to handle. Once upon a time I used having to face life sober as an excuse to keep drugging. It had been so long since I had been sober for an extended period that I forgot that I could do it.
And I'm still learning it all again, one day at a time.
Love,
Gina

Thanks Sammy,

Wow - that's some attacking going on here!!!
I did not want to start a war nor did I want to be thrown under the bus!!!
Another posted had specifically ASKED for the Thomas recipe!!
I also included warnings in that post about being careful with Benzos.
I agree that everyone should always detox under the supervision of a doctor. For those have that done so before, many will say that their doctor prescribed a benzo to help the w/d's. I'm pretty sure that tracey's doctor did also - I'm not 100% sure so please correct me (without an attack) if I am wrong.
I went thru an inpatient detox program and they gave me valium and other benzos along with other meds!! This is very common and I can't believe that I was attacked like this!! I'm sorry that I disagree that everyone should suffer ct w/d's so they remember how bad it is. I do not believe that will prevent relapsing.
And no where did I say to get benzos illegally. I guess I should have clarified to get them from your doctor and consult him/her about the whole detox process.
Also - I did not create the Thomas Recipe!! I also did not say that I think anyone trying to detox should use it. It was asked about previously and I just copied the info and posted it here. Someone was looking for it and I simply posted the information they asked for. I will think twice about ever doing that again. I am very sorry that I have upset so many people.
Personally, I am an opiate addict. I have used benzos before and never liked them AT ALL. I wrongly assumed that most opiate addicts are not also benzo addicts. I am sure that there are some out there, but I assumed that was the minority. Benzos always brought me down, made me feel very tired and sluggish - not to mention feeling hung-over the next day. Opiates had the opposite effect on me. I know many people that were addicted to opiates and feel the same way I do about benzos.
I would hope that anyone that might have the slightest inclination to get addicted or are already addicted to benzos would not put one near their mouth!!
I would also hope that people would do their own research and talk to their doctor before starting or stopping ANY kind of pills.
Again, I'm sorry to have upset anyone - that certainly was NOT my intention!!
Someone (I'm sorry, I forgot who) asked what the L-Tryosine was for.
From what I understand, it is supposed to be a mood elevator to help with the depression that many get when going thru w/d's.
I DO suggest that you research it and ask your own doctor so you can know for sure - same thing for dosage amounts.
Also always be sure to ask your doctor and/or pharmacist about taking it if you are taking any other medications - either prescription OR otc. Many herbs, 'natural' products and other otc's should not be mixed with certain other things.
I am not going to assume that everyone consults with their doctor - I will always clarify that. Or maybe I just should not post anything at all. I really do hope that no one reads something posted on a message board and just does it without doing their own research and getting dr advise!!
Again, I am very sorry.....

hey gina - i remember sitting in a rehab hospital detoxing...one of the nurses was sitting at a table with me. i was lamenting over the mess/wreckage i found myself in. she very quietly, and very lovingly pointed out to me...what you are feeling now is a small leg of the journey. i can still see her using her hands to show me...
this is the journey...imagine your hands that are spread out as long as your arms will let them spread...
and
this is where you are right now...imagine your two fingers held up side by side.
this site doesn't allow for graphics, so i hope you get the picture.
i honor the spirit in you gina that loves life. what a precious spirit you are! you remind me so much of a dear friend mine. are you moving back to n.c.? i'm in virginia and how sweet it would be to meet you!
dearest sharon - thanks again for writing to me. each time i log on to this site, i think of you. i have seen you write of an upcoming surgery that you need to have done. please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers and if you ever want to talk privately, my email is dsam2u@comcast.net or you can IM on yahoo at dsam2u.
i wish you much peace and good health.

Agreed, though this appears to have been posted with good intentions, please do not post information that involves accessing doctor-prescribed medications without a doctor's prescription.

Sammy,
Well, youve just made my day. Im honored to remind you of a friend, especially one dear to you. Coincidentally, you remind me of our yoga teacher. He leads my family in our practice every Sunday morning and Im trying to adopt his outlook on things. Hes all about balancing what is insignificant in the infinite against what is vital in the moment. He always reminds me that its not about pain, nor gain --and to just breathe.
I would very much like to meet you someday.
Love, Gina

I fit in this category...and in fact, this is what drs will give you for a few days. Another good one to ask the dr for is CATAPRESS Patches, or clonadine. That helps also.
And the sauna thing is right on!! That helps alot...
