Ot..need Quick Answer Re Salt

Hey there

I asked on another thread but thought id get a faster answer by starting this thread...

Im puzzled ....i ran out of rock salt and have to get the trout in the oven...

Normally i bake the trout in the oven totally covered up by a mountain of rock salt..but i have none..

QUESTION..May i use ICE SALT instead??

It comes in the same size bag, and it looks the same..doesnt say anything about being poisonous on the bag, but it is meant for the driveway and it melts the ice and snow...

Dangerous or okay to use???

I have no idea here...anyone know???

Thanks

Ali
Is it mineral salt? That has chemicals in it? I don't know if I would eat that crap Ali. LOL

Then again what do I know?

Taste a piece and tell me what it tastes like! LOL

Ps. My brother and my boyfriend both said NO don't eat it. Go buy some salt. Don't use the driveway salt Ali.

Rae

Okayt ill go taste a bit but dont have anything to compare it to...lol

Compare it to the rock salt or the regular salt. See how it tastes. Just a lil piece!

My brother is on the phone with me and he said do NOT eat anything that says " DRIVEWAY SALT"-LOL

Make a grilled cheese sandwich and some tomato soup! LOL

I bet the trout will be just as good without anything on it.

Have a good dinner.

ali - do you have any kosher salt in the house?

sam
Most salt for driveways contains other chemicals, not to be used for cooking. Any sea salt around?
here ya go ali - kosher salt or sea salt would be a good substitute. as co said, ice salt is used for making ice cream and is not put in the ice cream but used to melt the ice.

here's a link as to suitable salts for cooking and other uses.

hope your dinner turns out delicious!

seafood rissotto and trout baked in salt, I had bacon and eggs, lol
seafood rissotto and trout baked in salt???

I was thinking the same thing. I had striper rolled in corn meal with hushpuppies.

I am going fishing on Monday though. So I can get some more striper rolled in corn meal with hushpuppies.

/yum
im married to an Italian and he loves his meals....what can i say?lol

Sam, i dont have any Kosher salt...and dont have any vehicle to go out to the store...

Ive baked the trout already ..

Normally i just smack the big mountain of salt and take the fish out and immediately dish it ( its all in the presentation..lol) place on top of risotto...

I havent opened it and now am thinking i shouldnt take the chance..

im going to that website first and check out the difference.
Thanks all for responding..

hawk im sorry i am wrecking your thread..i cant seem to get my pics posted this time for some reason...

Buono Apetito

Ali
I just did a quick search and some driveway salt contains other chemicals.

I wouldnt use it.
Hey SP how've you been? Good to see you posting.
SP-
Hey how's things going? You doing OK?
Good thanks JD and CO, just a flying visit.

Apparently they often add Methyl-a-D-glucopyranoside to the ice, which absorbs moisture before salt. This stops the salt going rock hard and it distributes better.
