Hi everyone during my active alcoholism there were only a couple of prayers I used. One was when I was that sick from the amount of alcohol I had drunk, and was on my hands and knees vomiting the last bit of bile up from the pits of my stomach.
This is the only way I can describe it because alcoholism is not a pretty disease. That prayer was. Oh God Never Again. But this is the insanity of the disease. Knowing how sick the alcohol made me and remembering just a little of the insane things I may have done. I picked up another drink and done it to myself all over again.
Another prayer was when I was on the steps of the courthouse being charged with some alcoholic incident I dont remember doing. Things like drink driving. And that prayer was. God if you get me out of this one I wont do this again. I DID do it again. And again. Today my prayers are different
I try not to pray so much for myself unless its to be of use to others and the God I prayer to is one of my understanding. Because my disease doesnt discriminate it does not care what colour you may be. What nationality you are. What religious beliefs you follow.
The Higher Power I believe in today is one of love and truth. I would like to put down some prayers I use today if no-one has any objections. The first prayer I was introduced to was the.
SERENITY PRAYER
God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot changeCourage to change the things I can... and Wisdom to know the difference.
One thing this prayer says to me is. I cannot change 99percent of the things outside of me. People, places, things and situations. This has helped me out of a lot of unnecessary verbal and physical conflicts.
I can change 99percent of the things inside me. And the wisdom to know the different between the two.
I have a couple of other prayers I use in recovery and would like to share. I understand prayer can be a very personal thing. but would like to hear any prayers others may use.
I understand we have a lot of differences in our lives and this is only how it was for me. If there are some similarities you can relate to then we can help each other.

Hi to all.
This is another great prayer I like to use. And if I utilize in my life, my days seem to run a lot smoother.
I am learning to live each day as though it was my last. Because on day it will be. "I am not planing on going anywhere yet." But I would like to have a little peace in what time I have left for myself and those I love.
This prayer helps me achieve that. Thanks to prayers like this one .
Today I have Peace of Mind. Rather than A Mind in Pieces.
ST. FRANCIS' Prayer
Lord, make me a channel of thy peace,
that where there is hatred, I may bring love;
that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness;
that where there is discord, I may bring harmony;
that where there is error, I may bring truth;
that where there is doubt, I may bring faith;
that where there is despair, I may bring hope;
that where there are shadows, I may bring light;
that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.
Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted;
to understand, than to be understood;
to love, than to be loved.
For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.
It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life.

THE DIVINE SHEPHERD
PSALM 23
The Lord is my Shepherd,
I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside still waters;
He restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
For His Name's sake.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil;
For you are with me;
Your rod and Your staff - they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies,
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life.
And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
My whole life long.
[Psalm 23:1-6; NRSV]
Thankyou Bob I to like to read the 23rd Psalm
Here is another version of the 23rd Psalm for those in recovery. It is not meant to replace the origional.Hope you like it. If this offends anyone I will remove it.
23rd Psalm of Recovery
The Lord is my sponsor, I shall not want.
He makes me to go to many meetings.
He leads me to sit back, relax & listen with an open mind.
He restores my soul, my sanity & my health.
He leads me in the path of sobriety, serenity & fellowship for my own sake.
He teaches me to think, to take it easy, to live & let live & do first things first.
He makes me more humble & grateful. He teaches me to accept the things I cannot change, to change the things I can & gives me the wisdom to know the difference.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of despair, frustration, guilt & remorse, I will fear no evil.
For Thou are with me, your program, your way of life, your twelve steps, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies: rationalization, fear, anxiety, self-pity, resentment.
You anoint my confused mind & jangled nerves with knowledge, understanding & hope.
No longer am I alone, neither am I afraid, nor sicken, nor helpless, nor hopeless.
My cups runs over.
Surely sobriety & serenity shall follow me every day of my life, one day at a time, twenty-four hours at a time.
As I surrender my will to You & carry Your message to others, I will dwell in the house of Higher Power, as I understand him, one day at a time, forever & ever.
Amen

Hi To All.
During my active addiction I had a closed mind and a very bad hearing problem. No one was able to tell me anything, I knew it all. {Or thats what I thought}
Today I realize the more I think I know, the less I really know. But at least today I am teachable. One thing I have learned today is.
United we Stand, Devided we Stagger.
And through all those years I thought I was the only one going through the things I was going through. I came to Alcoholics Anonymous and found out how wrong I was. I found others who had the same similarities as myself and together we could help each other and that I cant but we can.
So this little prayer says a lot for me .
Unity Prayer
I put my hand in yours and together we can do what we could never do alone.
No longer is there a sense of hopelessness.
No longer must we depend upon our own unsteady willpower.
We are all together now, reaching out for power and strength greater than ours.
And as we join together, we find love and understanding beyond our wildest dreams.

The Senility Prayer
God, Grant me the Senility
to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones that I do,
and the eyesight to tell the difference.
Amen
Now that I'm older, here is what I have discovered --
I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it.
My wild oats have turned into prunes and All Bran.
I finally got my head together, now my body is falling apart.
It's funny, but I don't remember being absent minded.
All reports are in ... Life is now officially unfair.
If all is not lost, where is it????
It is easier to get older than it is to get wiser.
Some days you are the dog. Some days you are the hydrant.
I wish the buck stopped here, I could use a few.
Kids in the back seat cause accidents.
Accidents in the back seat cause . . . kids.
It is hard to make a comeback when you have never been anywhere.
The only time the world beats a path to your door is when you are in the bathroom.
If God had wanted me to touch my toes, He would have put them on my knees.
When I am finally holding all the cards, why does everyone decide to play chess?
It is not hard to meet expenses . . . they are everywhere.
The only differences between a rut and a grave are the depth and one has the ends kicked out.
These days I spend a lot of time thinking about the here after.....
I go somewhere to get something and then wonder what I am here after.......
If I wake up of a morning and nothing hurts, it may be a good indication that I have died during the night.
Oh, Well . . . I am lost! I have gone out looking for myself.
If I should return before I get back, PLEASE ask me to wait!!

Desiderata
Go placidly amid the noise and haste and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender,be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.
Be careful.
Strive to be happy.

Addict's Prayer
Higher Power, please direct my thinking, especially move it from self-pity, and dishonest or self-seeking motives.
As I go through the day and face indecision, please give me an intuitive thought, or a decision. Make me relax and take it easy; don't let me struggle.
Show me all through the day what my next step is to be and give me whatever I need to take care of each problem.
Higher Power, I ask you especially for freedom from self-will, but give me the knowledge of your will for me and the power to carry it out in every contact during the day.
As I go through this day, let me pause when agitated or doubtful and ask you for the right thought or action.
Let me constantly be reminded that I am no longer running the show, humbly saying many times each day, "Thy will be done" and agreeing that it is.
AMEN!
Thankyou Bob for your prayer and Stopdrinking6975 for your kind words .

An Alcoholic's Anonymous Prayer
Almighty God, I humbly pray,
Lead me and guide me through this day.
Cast out my selfishness and sin,
Open my heart to let You in.
Help me now as I blindly stray
Over the pitfalls along the way.
Let me have courage to face each task,
Invest me with patience and love, I ask.
Care for me through each hour today,
Strengthen and guard me now, I pray.
As I forgive, forgive me too,
Needing Your mercy as I do.
Oh, give me Your loving care,
Never abandon me to despair.
Yesterday's wrongs I would seek to right,
Make me more perfect in Your sight.
Oh, teach me to live as best I can,
Use me to help my fellow man.
Save me from acts of bitter shame,
I humbly ask it in Your name. ~~ Anonymous ~~

yes, i notice two things.
first, it refers to God's mercy, which is infinite, and which we all need. but we must work on accepting it. and in God's mercy is healing. in his mercy, God saves us and forgives us and removes our guilt and our shame. we can't remove those things no matter how hard we try, but he can and will -- in his mercy, if we are willing to make the decision to accept it. it's a gift, and like all gifts (regardless of where they come from ) we have to accept. and acceptance -- we have to work on it. we do the work and he exercises his mercy. and we are healed. by God. we are all sinful, everyone one of us.
how ? one way is to live out the Lord's Prayer: " . . . and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who tresspass against us . . ." the two are linked. as we forgive others, God forgives us.
secondly, yes, the firt letter of the captilized words spell our Alcoholics Anonymous. thanks for the prayer. i had not seen it before.
Wow Bob you are spot on plus more. Thankyou for taking time to unfold the prayer like you have.
Here is something else I like to read from time to time. Something to think about.
God's Cake
Sometimes we wonder, "What did I do to deserve this?" or "Why did God have to do this to me?" Here is a wonderful explanation!
A daughter is telling her Mother how everything is going wrong, she's failing algebra, her boyfriend broke up with her and her best friend is moving away.
Meanwhile, her Mother is baking a cake and asks her daughter if she would like a snack, and the daughter says, "Absolutely Mom, I love your cake."
Here, have some cooking oil," her Mother offers.
"Yuck" says her daughter.
"How about a couple raw eggs?"
"Gross, Mom!"
"Would you like some flour then? Or maybe baking soda?"
"Mom, those are all yucky!"
To which the mother replies: "Yes, all those things seem bad all by themselves. But when they are put together in the right way, they make a wonderfully delicious cake!
God works the same way. Many times we wonder why He would let us go through such bad and difficult times. But God knows that when He puts these things all in His order, they always work for good! We just have to trust Him and, eventually, they will all make something wonderful!
God is crazy about you. He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning.
Whenever you want to talk, He'll listen. He can live anywhere in the universe, and He chose your heart.
I hope your day is a "piece of cake!"

An 11th Step Prayer
Good Morning, GOD... Thank you for this day. As I consider my plans for this day, I ask that you direct my thinking through this day. Free me from self-pity, dishonest and self-seeking motives; let me use my mental and physical faculties with assurance. Elevate my thought-life to a higher plane.
Guard me from indecision by inspiring me to an intuitive thought or decision and free me from self-will, so that I make no requests of you for myself. I ask for myself only if others will be helped. So God, allow me through your will to relax - to take it easy - so I'm capable of doing your will.
As I go through this day, if I should become agitated or doubtful, let me pause and ask for the right thought or action. Let me practice the principle of self-forgetfulness so that I can honestly say, "THY WILL, NOT MY WILL BE DONE."

Hi everyone.
My whole life (that of which I can remember) was one of.Get them before they get you. Trust no-one. .Lie, steal, manipulate .Take, take, take. I hated the world. And I wonder why I didnt have too many friends around. And why my family didnt want anything to do with me. But through the grace of God and the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous and its 12 step program for living. I have been able to Alter my Attitude and in time change my way of thinking. Give Time, Time .Today I believe its in giving we receive .And giving can be taking time to listen to others and be a trusted servant. It was prayers like the 3rd step and 7th step prayer in the big book and the Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi in the 12x12 that helped me do this and prayers like the one below .
Prayer for Loving Others
Higher Power
Make me an instrument of your love. May I see each circumstance in my life as an opportunity to grow in your love? May I see my environment as a place to grow in your love ?
May I then take this love to other people.....?
*When I am tempted to become impatient, help me to be patient.
*When I am tempted to become unkind, help me to be kind.
*When I am tempted to become jealous, help me to be tolerant.
*When I am tempted to become boastful or proud, help me give you the glory.
*When I am tempted to be rude or selfish, give me the gift of gentleness.
*When I am tempted to take offence, help me to let go .
*When I am tempted to become angry with someone, give me the gift of forgiveness . *When I am tempted to become resentful , give me your power to love.
Lord, grant that I may take no pleasure in criticizing others, but that I may see good in them, as you do.
**When I begin to concentrate on the faults and failures of others, give me courage to praise their accomplishments.
**Help me be loyal to those you give me to love.
**Help me to believe in them, even when they do not believe in themselves. To expect the best from them, but accept the best they can give. May I always defend them, as you always defend me?
All gifts and powers come from you. All will come to an end. With one important exception, the gift of love!!! Lord, when I was a child, I thought like a child, I acted like a child, and I reasoned like a child. Now that I have become an adult, I release my childish ways.
Amen

Hi to Everyone
Here is another smaller prayer by Saint Francis of Assisi. Hope you like it.
Where there is charity and wisdom
Where there is charity and wisdom, there is neither fear nor ignorance.
Where there is patience and humility, there is neither anger nor vexation.
Where there is poverty and joy, there is neither greed nor avarice.
Where there is peace and meditation, there is neither anxiety nor doubt.

Good Morning to everyone.
When I first came to AA the only prayers I knew were.
God if you get me out of this situation Ill never do it again. I did.
And the mornings I came too with a hangover to beat all hangovers. I would sometimes say .O God never again. They were very hollow prayers.
So things for me had to change because people said. The person I was drank .And the person I was will drink again. I didnt know to many prayers but again someone pointed out to me a couple of prayers that may help .They were in the Big Book Alcoholics Anonymous .
I have found them very Helpful in my recovery. Along with all the other prayers that are available in the book.
MORNING PRAYER
God, direct my thinking today so that it be empty of self-pity, dishonesty, self-will, self-seeking and fear. God, inspire my thinking, decisions and intuitions. Help me to relax and take it easy. Free me from doubt and indecision. Guide me through this day and show me my next step. God, show me what I need to do to take care of any problems. I ask all these things that I may be of maximum service to you and my fellow man. In the spirit of the Steps I pray. AMEN
NIGHT PRAYER
God, forgive me where I have been resentful, selfish, dishonest or afraid today. Help me to not keep anything to myself but to discuss it all openly with another person - show me where I owe an apology and help me make it. Help me to be kind and loving to all people. Use me in the mainstream of life, God. Free me of worry, remorse or morbid (sick) reflections that I may be of usefulness to others. AMEN
(Both derived from page 86 in the Big Book)

My first prayers....
In the morning... "Please help me get through the day without using."
In the evening... "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!"
I'm a little more articulate now... but, it was simple and it worked...
Much Love,
Lox

Hi Lox .
Thankyou for your post and yes it can be as simple as you said.
And in the beginning I prayed with disbelief but I prayed with sincerity.
{I wanted things to change but I wasnt sure they would} And after awhile the belief came .I couldnt denier the changes that were happening .
And like you my first prayers were.
In the morning.... Please give me the strength not to pick up the first drink or drug today.
In the evening In the begining I guess I just took it for granted that I stayed sober that day. But I to learnt to say Thankyou and I havent stopped..
In time I have learnt a few other prayers And one thing I am sure of God always answers me its ever yes or no I dont always like the answers but today I can accept them.
I have prayed to win the lottery a few times and I tell Him what I am going to do with all the money. But He mustnt think I am ready yet the answers been No. Are well .LOL
The prayers I have posted are prayers I have utilized along the way; people can take them or leave them, thats there choice.
But if anyone has a prayer they would like to share I for one would like to read it. I need all the help I can get.
God Bless All. Have a great 24 hrs

Hi All another little prayer I like.
Prayer Of Mary Stewart
Keep us, O God, from pettiness; let us be large in thought, in word, in deed.
Let us be done with faultfinding and leave off self-seeking. May we put away all pretences and meet each other, face to face, without self-pity and without prejudice.
May we never be hasty in judgment and always generous? Let us take time for all things; make us to grow calm, serene, gentle.
Teach us to put in action our better impulses-straightforward and unafraid. Grant that we may realize it is the little things of life that create difficulties; that in the big things of life we are as one.
Oh, Lord, let us not forget to be kind. Amen.
Your Wanted ,Needed and Loved ..God Bless All...
